Arts and Crafts Project: Practical Assessment

Kongfa Wattanawit School, formerly Wanisa Rangsit, explored the value of Thai arts and crafts through the Arts and Crafts project. The learning connected artistic expression with practical craftsmanship and the wisdom passed down through people and generations.

Pottery, wood carving, weaving and the traditional Thai crafts known as Chang Sip Mu offered starting points for discovery. The original story celebrated the lasting value of a unique work made by a child, even as technology continued to develop.

From research to a meaningful creation

Children studied, planned and developed their projects into tangible creations. Beyond their appearance, the works carried meanings and ideas that children were ready to explain. Parents assessed these presentations on Sunday 25 February 2018 as part of the practical assessment for Term 2 of academic year 2017.

Five groups, five creative themes

Students organised the activities and presentation spaces in five groups. The original Thai titles used wordplay, and are retained here:

• Primary 1: แกว่งเท้าหาเสี้ยน
• Primary 2: ปั้นน้ำเป็นตัว
• Primary 3: ทอดสะพาน
• Primary 4: มือไม่พายเอาเท้าราน้ำ
• Primary 5: ตัดไม้ข่มนาม

Children as guides

Each child welcomed one parent and guided them through the activities in their group. Over one and a half hours, children explained their knowledge, working processes and learning from the preparations. This individual presentation placed shared activity between the child and the parent assessor at the centre of the experience.
